iPhone 5 Wi-Fi Problems (SLOW)

Hi Everyone,

Looking for anyone who has had this issue before or who would know how to help before I call Rogers or Apple. Currently have an iPhone 5 running IOS 6.1.2 (jailbroken) and using the Rogers Hiltron cable modem set to bridge mode (disabled the Residential Gateway and UPNP but also tried it with it on as well) with a 3TB Time Capsule taking care of the DNS, DHCP, etc.... ONLY my iPhone 5 wifi is super SLOW (so bad I've got to turn it off when I get home and just rely on my LTE data connection) I have an iPad 2nd gen, 3rd gen, iPhone 4, 3Gs, MacBook Pro, iMac, and MacBook Air with NO problems connecting to and getting a strong wifi connection.

I tried the following with no LUCK:

1. Reset the entire phone to factory many times.

2. Reset the network on the phone

3. Setup the Hiltron Modem as my main modem/router/wireless.

4. Reset my Time Capsule to factory

5. Updated my Time Capsule firmware to latest

6. Used a D-Link and SMC routers in place of my Time Capsule

7. Manually added Google DNS settings to phone

In addition,

The phone's wireless works perfectly at work! Of course it's a different provider but I've brought in my Time Capsule and it still works fine. So it's NOT the phone in my opinion. It must be the Hiltron modem for some reason!  Has anyone had this issue or have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Kevin

Re: iPhone 5 Wi-Fi Problems (SLOW)

Hey Kevin,

That does sound a little odd.  Do you have an Ethernet cord that is long enough that you could try to disable the WiFi all together and test with just the Time Capsule?  What kind of speeds do you get on the iPhone5? Have you tried to restore it and test to make sure that the jailbreak is not also playing a factor?

Have any other community members experienced any issues like this and would like to share their input with Kevin?

Thanks,

Re: iPhone 5 Wi-Fi Problems (SLOW)

Hi Andrew,

That does sound a little odd.

Yes....does seem so.....

Do you have an Ethernet cord that is long enough that you could try to disable the WiFi all together and test with just the Time Capsule?

Yes...I do have multiple computers wired to the Time Capsule and they have tested to be good connections...am getting between 5 -35 mb/s at speedtest.net

What kind of speeds do you get on the iPhone5?

At home, most of the time using speedtest.net app, I'm geting about .5 mb/s which is a little less than my upload speed. Every now and then, if I turn off wireless and back on again I will get 5 or 10 mb/s. At work, I get a consistant 35-65 mb/s upload and the same for download. So it can't be the phone if I consistenly get  good speeds at work.

Have you tried to restore it and test to make sure that the jailbreak is not also playing a factor?

Have not since the iphone 5 in question gets consistent fast speeds at work. Am stumped.....

HELP....K

Re: iPhone 5 Wi-Fi Problems (SLOW)

Hi Kevin,
I've been having problems with this for months! Rogers seriously needs to fix this issue. The wifi will drop and say I'm on wifi but it will charge me for using data. My bill a few months back was ridiculous expensive because of this issue. Rogers doesn't seem to know about this issue everytime I bring it up on twitter; they seriously need to get their stuff together and realize its still happening since last September! My phone isn't jailbroken and it continues to have this issue for months now... I try to do a speedtest on my iphone 5 and it comes up at 1 or 2 mb/s maximum it's absolutely horrible! I have teksavvy internet and we've tried everything, they even sent me a new modem and we just bought a new top of the line router so it has nothing to do with teksavvy, but Rogers Internet/service!! This is becoming a huge issue and extremely frustrating!!

Re: iPhone 5 Wi-Fi Problems (SLOW)

If you have techsavvy for internet.. and the speeds are fine otherwise.. it has nothing to do with rogers internet/service for that part of it.

As for your phone... my iphone 5 seems to run fine on wireless (through rogers), never as fast as say my laptop, but still very decent.

Have you done all the updates on the phone?  Have you tried a factory reset on the phone yet?
Compared to ALL the other phones pretty much, the iphones are the ONLY ones that rogers has no control over the software.. they dont add any of their bloatware, etc.. it is ALL controlled by apple.
So if there is a software issue where it is not staying on wifi, etc.. this is an APPLE issue, and best brought up with apple.

Re: iPhone 5 Wi-Fi Problems (SLOW)

Did you or anyone ever get this fixed. I had got my iPhone 5 mid April of 2014 and I have that problem. At Starbucks coffee, my average download is between .10 and .23 while upload is ZERO. That is when I sit in the centre close to the modem. But when I am at either ends of Starbucks, my iPhone can't even see an internet provider. When I am at church, my phone can't see an internet provider. When at home, download goes only up to 3.2. If I want to use Wi-Fi, I need to use my old phone, windows Nokia 920. At Starbucks it gives me 8 and higher. At home, my Nokia 920 goes up to 32mbps. The issue is the phone. Pity I need to have two phones. I'm very disappointed with iPhone.

Hello VeganMan

Its only you. Many others have had the same issue with the iPhone 5 WiFi. Some made threads on the Apple Community Forums yet no fix. It seems the iPhone 5 WiFi antenna has issues picking up signal straights at times.
