Unlocking iPhone 5 for travel

Hi, I have a question regarding unlocking iPhone. I am planning to buy an iPhone 5 on a 3 year contrsct plan. At the same time, I travel a lot on business and I plan to ask Rogers to unlock my iPhone so that I can use another SIM card when I am out of country. I know that AT&T in the US does it, not sure about Rogers. Let me know if this is something Rogers would do.

Thanks,

George

Hello gm968

Rogers will unlock your phone if you clarify for their policy / rule. This is there policy:

1. The phone must be bought outright and be activated on a Rogers account.
2. If the phone is bought on a term you may get the phone unlocked after 90 days from phone's activation date, you need not wait till the term expires. ***
3. The unlocking fee is $50 if Rogers decides to unlock it for you.

If you do not meet this, they will not unlock the phone for you.

*** UPDATE ***

Re: Unlocking iPhone 5 for travel

So if I don't "finish" my 3 year term with them, they won't unlock it? It does not make any sense. Can somebody confirm this?

Thanks, GM

Hello gm68

It does make sense. if u dont believe me, here are a few sites / threads will show you the info i am giving you as well. It  is correct & not lying or anything. You can also search on Google and see the same exact answer as well.. This started last year & it is the same exact unlocking policy till this day until Rogers changes it.

"

To have a device unlocked, a customer must:

  • Have an account in good standing
  • Have paid the un-subsidized / no term cost for the device at least 30 days prior OR have finished their Commitment Period (contract)
  • Unlock a device which is listed in their equipment history (no grey market devices)
  • Pay a $50 unlocking fee plus applicable taxes (note: prepaid customers must have a $50 plus the applicable taxes, balance on their account)"

Re: Unlocking iPhone 5 for travel

Your last post made sense and your first one was poor English. You made it sound like someone in a 3 year commitment pays off the flex tab or buyout cost then they had to wait 3 years anyways then pay 50$ + tax . And that would be ridiculous. Just saying when in fact you pay flex tab wait a month pay 50$ + tax (oh and have an account with device listed ) I've done this without waiting the month with a greymarket device aka usedeverywhere

Re: Unlocking iPhone 5 for travel

Maybe it was worded wrong-ish.

In the end.. weither via the OLD 3 year contracts, or the NEW flextab.

The hardware subsidy needs to be paid off, so paid out one way or the other, and then the phone can be unlocked for the $50.

That is correct. Mind you even when asking a Rogers rep, you will get the same answer i gave on my last post UNLESS you tell them you want to pay off the FlexTab.

Whatever you are saying Colwood and whatever you are thinking GM968, you want to unlock your iPhone 5 ? 80$ no matter what if you still with or not under Rogers contract. Find a Way to unlock your ANY PHONE isn't complicate.

On keypad of your iPhone type in *#06# an unlock codes will appear, this code is to unlock your iPhone, am i making any cents here colwood ?

Re: Unlocking iPhone 5 for travel

I have been trying to get an answer to this for months. After multiple conversations with customer retention, posts on howard forums, and deleted threads on here due to 'violation' for bringing it up, I have determined that Rogers does not want us talking about this or knowing that their competition does it for $35 while under contract/obligation.

Here are the facts about unlocking a phone with Rogers, due exclusively to their policy, and no other reason:

• You must not have an outstanding FlexTab on your phone. This means either waiting the 3 years or paying out the balance remaining on the tab

• Rogers no longer offers 'commitment' contracts. All accounts are tied to a FlexTab and that is the only value owing if you decide to leave their service to another provider.

• Rogers has no reasonable legal grounds that allow them to pursue you for the value of the phone if you were to walk away to, say, the USA. Apparently this happened a lot in the past. This is the TRUE reason for the lock on the phone.

I, like many, am eagerly awaiting when Rogers will trust me as a customer of nearly 12 years with a phone unlock. I look forward to it!
