Nexus 6P - WiFi Calling?

CairdeasYYJ

Can anyone with a 6P on Rogers confirm if Wi-Fi Calling is enabled or not? I live in a bit of a Rogers dead spot, and while I've already ordered the 6P, knowing if this feature is functional would be nice before I receive it, so I know if I should bother upgrading my router.

I notice that they support it on certain iOS devices already, but I've been happy with Android for too long to switch.

Thank you for your interest in WiFi calling on Android platform. Currently, as you are already aware it's supported only on iOS devices, iPhone 5c, 5s, 6, 6 Plus 6s and 6s Plus on iOS 9. Please stay tune, we keep updating the Community!

Thanks for the prompt reply, looking forward to Rogers implementing this feature on all platforms. Here's hoping it is soon, and not the typical 6/12 months+a day that's indicative of exclusivity contracts.

Hello @CairdeasYYJ

Rogers should be enabling this sometime in the future. The device is capable of doing it, just Rogers needs to test it & make sure it works for enabling it. Also the agreements with Google need to be there too.

I wouldn't get your hopes up for WiFi calling on Android anytime soon. The Note 4 was capable of doing it a year ago. The Note 5 is capable and so on. I don't see this happening in the near future at all with how Rogers handles Android.

Hello @Dx9

That's true and hopefully we do see this from Rogers enabled soon!

Hello @RogersMoin,

I don't have the best call reception in my home and I would really benefit from SIP or WiFi calling on my Nexus 6p.  Is there any progress with this or a rough ETA you can provide?

thanks,

Martin

Hello @Martinomac

Unfortunately it doesn't seem like there is any ETA or update either. Once they do announce something, they will announce it on here or on the main Rogers site.

Come on Rogers! This is an essential feature and the phones support it, can we at least know if the feature will ever be implemented or just being forgotten about for Android users?

Doesn't look like Rogers in any rush to support Android users on this one. Apple paid up lots of $ for the exclusivity.  Real shame though as many of us could use this feature for improved service.

Hello @Martinomac

Honestly it all depends. Apple never paid for exclusive rights to have it onl on their devices. So that is false. It's most likely due to them wanting to test it on on that device first. Do remember the Note 5 has WiFi Calling which is a Samsung Android device. I shall see what I can get from them about this.

Even the Note 4 has WiFi calling feature on the phone along with most other flagship Android devices but what I'm saying is that Rogers chooses not to support Android WiFi calling dispite the customer demand.

Hello @Martinomac

Android WiFi Calling will not be a feature on here from what i see seeing as majority of the carriers do not have it. The aee using the normal WiFi Calling which carrier offer. It's the same thing. Either way I'm pretty sure WiFi Calling for the Nexus will come.

Re: Nexus 6P - WiFi Calling?

With all theses comments van we have an update from Rogers? Been 6 months since the original answer. 🙂

Re: Nexus 6P - WiFi Calling?

It would be nice to see this enabled for Android devices that support it. I thought I saw something recently that they are supporting wifi calling for specific Android devices, but not the Nexus 6p which seems odd given that this is the pure version of Android and should be the easiest to support.

I had an iPhone 6 plus for about 10 months and I am happy to be back on Android. While I would like to get wifi calling activated, when I activated it on the iPhone, I found it to be too aggressive in moving me from the cellular network to wifi.  A bigger issue is that when I started a call on wifi, the call would drop if I moved out of wifi coverage rather than automatically transfer the call to the cellular network (even thought here was cell coverage). Not sure if this has been a problem for others.

Hello @ostaylor

Thats one feature I miss from the iPhone 6S Plus that I had. I wish they could bring that on the S7 edge and other Android devices too.

Re: Nexus 6P - WiFi Calling?

i have a roger's dead spot at my home and opened up tickets many times and finally engineers say that they need to upgrade towers to LTE soon in my area and that can happen in a year or two...in the meanwhile i started searching for wifi calling and called techsupport and they suggest that i can enable that on nexus 6p and this forum tells me a completely different picture then what is my option 🙂 leave rogers?

Re: Nexus 6P - WiFi Calling?

Wifi calling available now but for iphone and Samsung only. Nexus is a no go.

Hello @Idpike

WiFi Calling for iPhone and Samsung devices have been out for almost 2 years.. ( IPhone since the launch of iPhone 6 in 2014). Samsung since last year.

Nexus line may see it but since the Nexus line is no more, hoping that the new Pixel line gets its.

What a joke.  Why withhold features?  The framework is there in the OS, just let us use it.  For more frustration, visit my thread about native visual voicemail support in android (which is also built into the OS) but not enabled....

Hello @supervillain

As a company, they CAN withheld a fee features or programs as they get the okay from the manufacturers. Unfortunately at this moment doesn't seem like it will happen anytime soon.
