Rogers “Welcome Back” Offer Turned Out to Be a Scam – Charged $321 Just 4 Days After Activation

ushaanny
I've been around

I wanted to share my recent experience with Rogers in case it helps someone avoid the same trap.

I recently moved back to Rogers from Telus after getting a call from Fido (owned by Rogers) offering me a “Welcome Back” plan for $35/month per line (I got 2 lines). I was explicitly told:

  • The plan would be $35/month

  • It would include US calling

  • The $75 activation fee would be waived

I agreed and switched.

But just 4 days after activation, I received a bill for $312. 😳 Here's what I found out after hours on chat with customer service:

  • The activation fee was NOT waived. Instead, I was charged $75 up front and told I'd get $7.50 credited per month for 10 months (which means if I leave early, I lose that money).

  • US calling was NOT included as promised. They added a $27/month add-on without clearly explaining it.

  • The plan is listed as $70 with discounts applied to bring it down to $40, and then another $5 off if you set up autopay. So technically yes, it’s $35—but it’s not the simple plan I was sold.

I only got the $27 US calling add-on removed after pushing hard on chat. But the rest still stands—and I’m expected to pay a massive first bill while unemployed.

Good evening @ushaanny and welcome to the Community!

I can imagine how upsetting this experience must've been for you. I wish my colleagues had taken the time to explain the details of the offers to you. This information is also available in the account changes/activation email as well. The email would include all the info pertaining to the offers and the start and end dates of any applicable promotions.

I am glad you were able to have the US calling option removed. Since Rogers bills one month in advance, there may be partial charges on your first bill for the time between the start date of services (your service activation date) and the billing date. As a result, there will be charges for two different date ranges: one from the service activation date to the billing date, and another one for your next full billing cycle.

You can view Understanding charges on your Rogers bill - Wireless for more info.

always look at the plan price BEFORE discounts never after.
