I too was an old timer just like you. i used to record one show at a time, then two, then three.

since i find myself recording more and more, i moved with the times and got a digital pvr device used of course, and now am a happy camper. i also had a hard time finding a source of vhs cassettes, no one sells them no more

Even though my in laws cant really afford it.. they are renting a PVR.  Why?  Every 3 days, calling me or my wife up to have help with the VCR..
PVR, is 10x more simplier to use in the long run... just harder to KEEP the stuff long run if you wish to do so.

I went to a 2nd hand store near me the other day... there was a box of VHS tapes.. brand new... like 30 for $4... XD

As bad as it is to find VHS tapes.. its hard to find VHS machines themselves.. the ONLY ones i could find a while back, were the VCR/DVD combos, and even at that, they were older models (havent been updated in a few years).
I lucked out, they were clearancing at RadioShack (the source, but i refuse to call them that ).. one for $69.. AND it has a VCR to USB function!

So i have been slowly converting all my stuff to digital format.

Yes, but then you're limited to the network channels. A $700 antenna system might get you CBC, CTV, Global, CityTV, Omni, TVO, PBS, ABC, NBC, CBS and maybe one or two more - as long as it's not raining.

Another few hundred bucks for a 30" dish will get you whatever random satellite transmissions that may still be unencrypted.

But hey, there's always Netflix. If Rogers banwidth caps don't kill you after a couple of days.

Except we are in Canada.. and netflix canada.. the lineup SUCKS compared to the US.. you get some tv shows on netflix that are from the US specialty stations we have to pay up here... but any of the regular tv stations (even the ones that are still currently analog)... there is no programing on netflix canada

how do people record shows off satellite dish to their vcr? they need to use the receiver to change channels, its no different blaming rogers. sat companies make pvrs for people who are in your situation and guess what? people buy them and use them and it accomplishes their needs to watch tv shows later on when they come home from work

I still use analog, received a notice from Rogers that on May 31, 2012, I would loose channels if I don't turn digital. I was using my cousin's Roger's digital box that I now have to return since he will need his adapter in his new house.  Called Rogers to get my free digital adapter for the only one tv that I watch and Rogers is telling me that I have to pay for this new adapter...

Here's an idea.  Remove your cousin's Digital Set Top box from your account first. that way you dont trigger an extra outlet charge.   then give him back his box, then order the Free DTA. install it and wala.

If you add the DTA when you have your cousins STB on your account, your account will show u have 2 boxes, your account might only include one outlet thus thats why the rep told  you there would be an additional charge for the outlet.   doing what I suggests will not trigger this outlet charge.  got it?

Just to expand on what pauly said.

If you  have your cousins box.. like Pauly said.. un register it on yours.  It is using your ONE free outlet you get with basic cable.

Basic cable.. you only get one outlet free.. and right now that outlet is used by that box registered on yours.  Also until you un register his box, he wont be able to add it back.

By removing that box.. you should have one outlet free on the account, and then be able to get the one free adapter.

I've got an unlimited supply of tapes of my own. Though some manufacturers have left the field many still remain and the DVD/VHS machines are still for sale in many places. Cheaply!!! There advertised regularly and to suggest otherwise is being disingenuous to the extreme!

Representation your in-laws as people who needed help to operating there VHS and are now happily ensconced in the PVR Zone is unrealistic and unbelievable. At any level! Including being married period!!
