what i would like to see is having something like the fireplace showing when listening to one of the radio channels - esp. xmas music instead of a dull gray screen.

Right on! I used to have it on every morning over coffee and the newspaper before going to work. And, my family enjoyed it as background for dinner. Pleeeeeeeeeease, Mr Rogers! Bring it back! (no "cottage").
