Xbox Live - Rogers Rocket Hub W35- MTU and connection problems

I recently purchased the Rocket Hub (Sony Ericsson) W35 and was told by a tech that it should work out of the box with Xbox Live.  Not the case.

After talking with many techs who didn't seem to know much about the subject, I went to plan B (Google) and found some great stuff that led me to getting this working.  "Crono" did a great job opening up this issue, and the link is here  http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=118071

However, I found that I DID NOT need a public IP address for this to work.  Requesting a public IP address is an extra cost per month ($5 or $10).  So.... thanks goes out to Crono for all his work.  Now, let me post what I did to get this working with no extra costs involved :

Much of this is quoted directly from Crono, but with some of my own tweeks that worked for me.

1) MTU problem.

DO NOT LET XBOX FIND IT`S OWN IP ADDRESS.

- Access the Rocket hub first.  To do this, go to your web browser and type in 192.168.1.1  and hit enter.  The default password should be [ user ]. If it isn't check your manual for another password.

- Click on INTERNET menu on the left and on the right should be your DNS`s. Two of them. Write them down.

- Now, go to your XBOX > MY XBOX> SETTINGS > NETWORK SETTINGS.  You need to enter manually an IP address. Put in the subnet mask and the default gateway (the ones below should work). Exit out and enter into the DNS portion and put in the numbers you wrote down.

Example.

I.P. (removed for security purposes)
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.1

DNS 1 69.31.192.11
DNS 2 69.31.192.12

Once this is done you should not get MTU low anymore. I did not adjust anything in the Rockethub. Just made the XBOX dedicated. Keep in mind to, that you should do this to any other unit you have. Playystation, Wii, Laptop, PC. Just make sure each one gets there own separate IP address.

-Reboot the Rocket Hub after exiting.

-Reboot Xbox

2) Now, onto the Port Forwarding.  Very easy.

-Enter into the hub again, and click on the NAT menu on the left.

-Make sure "Enable Upnp" is checked. I clicked all the boxes for the the Application Level Gateway supported protocols. Don't think it really matters.

-Now below that you will see Port Forwarding. Click on "Add Instance", you will get a new screen with:

Protocol:
NAT Port:
Server IP:
Server Port:

So EXAMPLE, say it is for Xbox Live. ports 3074, 80, 88, and 53 need to be opened. NAT port and Server port are the ports, 3074,80,88,53. The server IP is the unit you will be allowing access. In this case the Xbox (Now the IP you gave the Xbox,PS3,Laptop,Wii, anything with an IP that you need to forward a port is used here). Protocol is either tcp or udp. Some ports require both some only tcp or udp. I did both to be safe.

EXAMPLE:

Protocol: tcp
NAT Port: 3074
Server IP: (removed for security purposes)
Server Port: 3074

Protocol: udp
NAT Port: 3074
Server IP: (removed for security purposes)
Server Port: 3074

You will need to do this for every port required. Hit apply and when everything is said and done reboot the hub again and your Xbox/PS3, let it start up completely and do the network test again. Should go right through with no problems.

Again, I did NOT need to request a public IP address from Rogers in order for this to work.

If this doesn't work for you, then I would suggest following what Crono did at this topic using a Public IP :

http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=118071

Also, please note that the ports listed above are for Xbox only;  I do not know what ports need to be opened for PS3 / Wii / etc, but I am sure that a google search would be able to find this info.

Hope that helps - happy gaming.

The instructions given on this post worked.  We couldn't connect to XBOX live and the error we were getting is "the MTU setting was too low."  Thanks to the person who figured this out and posted it for all to see and use.

Hey widdogg:

good job, man, you are a dude!

I don't do xbox live, or dead for that matter.  But both your web-based research on the topic, and your description of the problem resolution in this forum are great!

You are KOOL!

OK, so maybe I had one glass of wine too many.

But that doesn't change the fact of the case.  Book him Dano!

Helpful solutions indeed! Happy Widdogg could help out, he is KOOL!

@Widdogg

My apology, your post was removed by accident, here's the copy:

Hey i am glad i could help. I know how frustrating it is to have your xbox live down and not getting any help from tech support. I do have to say that i spoke with quite a few rogers itechies and most of them at least tried to offer help and suggestions although none with a complete solution. Maybe some of them will see this post, bookmark it and be more helpful to the next gamer.

I also have found another way to do this and i personally found it faster and simpler.

connect Rocket Hub as you regularly would

select the wireless router of your choice (mine is a Dlink DIR-615)

connect from LAN port on Rocket Hub to Internet port on router of your choice

connect everything to the LAN of the added router and boom! everything works

i even kept my original setting on my router and it worked

i also locked the connection to the Rocket Hub so other members of my family cant play with the HUB settings and i can still access it via the wireless if needed

Thanks for posting that.

I also tried that using my Netgear Wireless N router, however it would NOT work.  So I don't know if it was my router, or something else.

Just a question - are you using the Sony Ericksson Rocket Hub or the new NetComm Rocket Hub?

Thanks

Hey everyone,

well i've been using the hub now for almost a year.Had my share of problems with it thats for sure.Mainly my wireless just going down for hours apon end,but hooked up wired and it's fine...but anyways as far as x-box goes i've been playing with a "Strict" NAT now this whole time.My question is for INOFXI and WIDDOG....what is your NAT right now? Open? Moderate? or Strict? there are a few ways to get online and get connected,i agree but i'm more interested in NAT.I can play games with friends and such but if they have a strict NAT too, then we can't hook up.I've heard the ONLY way around not having a strict NAT is getting a private...err public (i always get mixed up what i have now, lol) is by calling rogers and getting one.Anyone comfirm this??

p.s anyone seen or heard about this netgear router that bell and i think rogers has? it any better in the ways of having a DNS or anything...honesty rogers, bell whoever get off your butt, make a router that is a "normal" router and make the NAT open!!! god,you have any idea how much more money you'll make??? no?? well do it and watch the dollars come in.

Hey there - I can't remember what my NAT is set at, but I don't think I changed anything from the default setting.  I will check when I get home and update you later on......

I am wired from xbox to Rogers Hub, and haven't had hardly any troubles at all playing online with friends.  Seems a little slower response than a normal connection, but overall I can't complain.  I am playing COD online at home on my acreage with very decent speeds.

well if you haven't changed anything, then it will be a strict NAT.which means you can connect to people who have an OPEN NAT and i think? moderate NAT but if you encounter someone else who has a strict NAT then it wont work.you most likely eet a lot of "restart" the search for players or whatever in games alot...i do.I have np hooking to friends either cause there all on WIRED internet connections and by default it's OPEN.Now i don't claim to be a networking guy here by anymeans but pretty sure thats the case.So i can connect too to my friends but a few have what i have so that means they have strict NATS too so we can't play together unless someone who has an OPEN NAT hosts.I don't know but if this dam router had a DMZ setting like normal router i think we could make it open nats, but it doesn't,nor will it ever.I just was reading about Netgears MBR 1210 model (which bell currently is selling,i don't think anyone else is) and i gotta say...wow.Much much better design, and features my god and it has DMZ,MTU settings, data limit controls etc. sounds pretty good.

anyways off topic there,sorry...but ya find out what your nat is.An easy way is if you have say halo reach,it will tell you what your NAT is..open,moderate or strict.I think other games to do,but do't recall what ones.

Now if we can just get some better data plans we would be doing ok.Like 5 gigs for the price of 3,10 for the price of 5 etc etc to me that would be alot more reasonable but i doult that will ever happen...it'll just up in price like my t.v programing just did...brutal...
