I've noticed that after upgrading to the latest official firmware - done OTA directly - for my Rogers 9700 the hardware Lock button on the top left corner no longer locks the device.
Travelling the subway, walking in a crowd, or just working or bike riding - I prefer to use this 'dedicated' lock button to securely lock my BB. In a crowd or subway its pretty easy for anyone to casually spy over my shoulder or yours and see information your typing into the BB or reading on it. Many times its personal or corporate financial data on the unit; telling me I shouldn't take opportune time to read in such situations is a copout. Sure I can easily press the hang-up key to jump to the home screen or menu+exit/close selection, yet sometimes apps (Reuters Pro) have nested screens where multiple "close" selections are required to actually close down the app, or pressing the hang-up button takes roughly 1.5seconds to actually do that. Bloomberg is a culprit. In any case the current firmware no longer locks the screen but puts the screen into standby.
I understand the need to optimize for battery life, yet locking the screen effectively put the screen into standby/screensaver mode.
Some might call this a bug, yet its not. Many other official 9700 firmwares released or approved by other providers worldwide have done the same thing. .544/523 actually does lock the unit. Loading non-rogers firmware is not the best solution as I looks some menu items or entries within the Messages> Options: General/Email Settings entries. Also should UMA work in the future - I don't wish to loose that function nor the support for it.
Rogers, please in future 9700 or any of your BlackBerry device firmware update decisions - PLEASE KEEP the dedicated LOCK button!
PS: I'm aware of the SHIFT+K solution to lock. This is not the best solution for A) its takes two hands to do quickly/fast which is not ideal in crowded situations, B) can ONLY be done after going to the homescreen anyway. Many times I'd like to lock the unit, then unlock it later to see updated information (still in coverage) in the app already loaded. I'm aware of changing my password lock settings to be 10seconds yet I'd rather not have to since at home I have more time & security to keep it unlocked for longer periods, switching these settings daily is just not practical.

Yes, I have that same problem. I shouldn't have updated.
I just keep wondering, why they would do that.

This is by design, and you're right that all new 5.0 software has the same behavior.
From experience in install the .743 software onto a device I own, I noticed the following: pressing the lock key only serves to temporarily disable the keyboard, not for any security purpose any longer.
As well, the Keyboard Lock icon was removed, and replaced with Password Lock; But only when a password is enabled on the device.
Even though the following suggests it applies to the 8500 series devices, it is completely valid for all 5.0.0.XXX where XXX is greater than some value I am not sure of.
Rogers has no control over this, RIM develops the software. Rogers just chooses what modules they want on their devices I think.

OH! And, where did Stand-By go?!
LoL, replaced by "Lock".
Dunno whats happening at RIM but they throw these curve balls all the time, makes you have to pay attention

On my units, when pressing the discussed button everything goes dark. Pressing a button after that brings up a message "Keypad is locked Press the lock button to unlock." Version is .743. What is it that it should do other than that based on your past experience?
I'm a little new to BB's.
Steve.

Thanks JALO,
Can anyone help out bubbbab aka Steve with his BlackBerry question?
He is new to the BB :-)

bubbbab isn't the one who needs help since he understands what the BB is doing and doesn't miss the original functionality, the loss of which the OP was lamenting.
To the OP:
- yes, what you observed seems to be the case now. But you don't need to press shift-k to lock from the main_screen, pressing 'k' alone should do it, so that's a little easier for you.
If you want one-button locking back you can reconfigure one of the BB's side-keys to do it for you - go into options/ScreenKeyboard and adjust one of the convenience keys - leave the one on camera set for camera, use the other key. Set it to "Password" or some such. Then you'll have one-button-from-any-screen full lockdown.
If you use a holster you can also config the BB to lock as soon as it's inserted into holster. Options/Security or something I think.
